Amman Amendment The Network: TUFH
The Executive Board of the World Health Organisation at its meeting in January 2009, formulated a draft resolution on “Primary health care, including health system strengthening”.

This is a very good document, but from The Network: Towards Unity for Health, we want to propose an amendment to point 1 (5):

"To train adequate numbers of health workers, including family physicians, primary care nurses and allied health professionals, to respond effectively to people's health needs and expectations through educational programs and continuous professional development and through high functioning multidisciplinary primary health care teams."

May we ask you to contact urgently your ministry of health, and ask them, to introduce already now this amendment to WHO Headquarters in Geneva, so that it can be discussed at the World Health Assembly in May 2009. Download file: Article

Doctors serving People: Restoring Humanism to Medicine through Student Community Service
Written by Edward Eckenfels, Emeritus Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, United States of America and published by Rutgers University Press.

Today's physicians are medical scientists, drilled in the basics of physiology, anatomy, genetics, and chemistry. They learn how to crunch data, interpret scans, and see the human form as a set of separate organs and systems in some stage of disease. Missing from their training is a holistic portrait of the patient as a person and as a member of a community. Yet a humanistic passion and desire to help people often are the attributes that compel a student toward a career in medicine. So what happens along the way to tarnish that idealism? Can a new approach to medical education make a difference?

Doctors Serving People is just such a prescriptive. While a professor at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Edward J. Eckenfels helped initiate and direct a student-driven program in which student doctors worked in the poor, urban communities during medical school, voluntarily and without academic credit. In addition to their core curriculum and clinical rotations, students served the social and health needs of diverse and disadvantaged populations. Now more than ten years old, the program serves as an example for other medical schools throughout the country. Its story provides a working model of how to reform medical education in America.

Reducing Health Care Costs Through Prevention
August, 2007. The report on Reducing Health Care Costs Through Prevention, prepared by Prevention Institute and The California Endowment with the Urban Institute, suggests that a majority of the most costly health conditions are preventable and just a 5% reduction in preventable illnesses and injuries could lead to substantial savings. Even end-of-life care expenses, often discussed as a virtual fixed cost, display reductions from prevention. The report can be found at: http://www.preventioninstitute.org/documents/HE_HealthCareReformPolicyDraft_091507.pdf

Rural and Remote Health: A new African voice
The e-journal Rural and Remote Health (RRH) is pleased to announce the launch of an African section of the Journal, under the section editorship of Ian Couper, Professor of Rural Health, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Professor Couper says: “This is a landmark for rural health in Africa. We trust it will become an important forum for health workers and researchers in Africa, and those concerned with its immense challenges."

The journal provides free access to readers after registration, as well as free publication for authors. It is committed both to maintaining its standards as a Medline-listed journal and to supporting aspirant and more experienced authors from Africa to publish their work. It is committed to innovative approaches to enhance information sharing amongst the health care community in rural Africa.

This new section of RRH can be accessed at www.rrh.org.au - and select “African section” from the main menu.

Since 2001, under the editorship of Professor Paul Worley, RRH has brought readers worldwide an easily accessible, peer-reviewed, international evidence-base to inform improvement in health service delivery and health status in rural communities.

RRH is a joint publication of the Australian Rural Health Education Network (ARHEN) and the Federation of Rural Australian Medical Educators (FRAME). The African section has been endorsed by the Rural Doctors Association of Southern Africa (RuDASA).

In a recent editorial entitled “Health and information in Africa: the role of the journal Rural and Remote Health”, Professors Couper and Worley said, “The issues of rural and remote health – such as access to care, workforce difficulties, communication challenges, skills sets, teamwork, multidisciplinary functioning, the need for creative solutions and appropriate technology – are the issues of health care in most of Africa, outside of major urban centres”. WHO Report 2008
The World Health Report calls for return to primary health care approach. There are striking inequities within and between countries in health outcomes, in access to care, and in what people have to pay for care, says the World Health Report 2008 launched October 14, 2008.

To steer health systems towards better performance and greater equity, the report calls for a revival of the primary health care approach launched 30 years ago.

“….The report critically assesses the way that health care is organized, financed, and delivered in rich and poor countries around the world and documents a number of failures and shortcomings that have left the health status of different populations, both within and between countries, dangerously out of balance….”
